Winter is here!

It is really gotten cold here over the past couple of days.  Gone are the days of 30’s and 40’s temperatures.  We got some snow over the weekend here and temperatures sure have plummeted quickly and we are now in sub zero temperatures.   We haven’t had much by way of snow in these parts  yet this year, and for that I am thankful because I really do not like snow and ice, but alas there isn’t anything I can do about it.  So I sit here in the sun room with a cup of steaming hot Chai tea watching the birds on the feeders in our yard.  It always amazes me how they behave when storms or bad weather is imminent.  They are more aggressive and voracious at the feeders and with each other.  We are slated to get some more snow beginning this afternoon into this evening, with totals from various sources from 4-8 inches.  But this is Iowa and that can all change from hour to hour it always seems.

Lately we have been spotting some hawks in our yard.  I have been really wanting to get a picture of them.  On New Years Day we saw a rather large one just sitting calmly on the fence around our pool which is located right outside our kitchen window.  Yesterday my son came and got me to show me a smaller hawk, sitting on the same fence and it looked as if it were eating something.  Tearing feathers from a small grayish bird, which we now think is a Junco.  Circle of life right there in our backyard.  we learn so much by just watching them.

I hope someday in the not so distant future to be able to get a photo of at least one of the hawks to share since they are such beautiful and majestic creatures.

  1. Winter has arrived here too. It has been so cold today and the wind chill has been considerably lower. Right now, I’m watching our weather station and the temp is drop rapidly. Our area is under a weather watch tonight with projected wind chill temps running between -20 and -50. I’m snuggled up on the sofa with tea and a cozy blanket. 🙂

  2. I think birds that hang around in the snow are pretty fascinating:) And watching birds in the snow, while drinking tea, sounds like a lovely way to spend some winter time:)
